This Week in Manufacturing
How do you support a state when its economy would be the 5th largest economy in the world if it were a country? You support the small and medium-sized (SMM) businesses so they can grow, too. Let’s dive in!
Our feature company is actually a non-profit organization named California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) out of Long Beach, California. Their experts support over 1,500 SMMs with technical assistance, workforce development, and consulting services toward expansion.
This week’s first podcast, from Advanced Manufacturing Now, covers a California company’s work in the automotive manufacturing industry. The second podcast, from Stanford University’s The Future of Everything, dives into the future of underwater robotics.
Our headlines this week step out of California and go across states and industries to highlight advances in recycling, 3D printing, biofuels, and more!
Finally, this week’s Fun Fact and Social Video each showcase California’s continued dominance in manufacturing.

♨️ CMTC
Like all entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) struggle to maintain a successful business.
CMTC is a private non-profit organization and part of a National Network of 51 Manufacturing Extension Partnership® (MEP) Centers (one in every state and Puerto Rico) tasked and funded by the Department of Commerce to support SMMs. CMTC’s expert team delivers an array of critical services such as strategic planning, quality management, Lean/Continuous Improvement, cybersecurity, supply chain optimization, and much more.
CMTC has increased the number of SMMs they serve to more than 1,600 companies annually, significantly impacting California manufacturers and the state’s economy.
Upshot: “Our goal is to educate and showcase the value of manufacturing to the California economy. We leverage our partnerships throughout the state to promote manufacturing.”
